The Flag Bearer

Great Hackers Reveal

In the new project ‘De Vendeldragerster’ (The Flagbearer), Pauline Nijenhuis wants to investigate what remains in a society that is increasingly dependent on automation and robotization. In her research into this tradition, Pauline also wants to learn to wave a flag herself.

She wants to show that the human body has an irreplaceable function. To do this, we go back to how people have conveyed a message to large groups for centuries. The flagbearer can convey her message without the intervention of a machine. The body is literally central. The strength, motor skills and flexibility determine the quality of the flag-waving and the transmission of the message. With the imagination of her flag bearer, Pauline wants to achieve that people become more aware of the wealth and value of traditions and (analog) communities, such as guilds and associations.

In the performance The Great Hackers Reveal, Pauline, together with the flag bearers of the Schuttersgilde St Martinus (Gaanderen), imagines the battle of the Firewall against possible hackers. By means of banners designed by her with texts from hackers' mail received by herself, in combination with traditional banner flags, she creates the connection between the analogue and digital world.
Pauline wears a special garment, the Tunica. This is her 'firewall' consisting of machine-embroidered passwords, made in collaboration with TextielLab (Textielmuseum) Tilburg.
